THE government of India has laid a levy on jute and jute goods to be exported from Bangladesh and Nepal which is likely to be enforced for 5 years from the date of notification. Usually, an anti-dumping duty is a protectionist levy that a government enforces on foreign imports which it considers are priced below the market value of goods. India is our neighbouring country.
Now, under SAFTA agreement, the jute and jute products of Bangladesh have the benefit of zero-duty excess on export to the Indian market. Approximately 4.0 million farmers and some 0.2 million working men are directly related with these items in Bangladesh. The government should take up with its counterpart in India and start bargaining with it immediately after receiving the official decision and we hope the Indian government will respond positively.
